For years, I believed that exercise had to be punishing to be effective. Sweaty HIIT sessions, relentless cardio, pushing my body to its limit - I thought this was the only way to keep in shape and feel strong. But instead of feeling powerful, I felt drained. Instead of feeling uplifted, I felt depleted. My nervous system was always on edge, and my body held onto tension rather than releasing it and besides all of that, I could never stick with it.
Then, I slowed everything down….
I embraced movement that felt nourishing rather than punishing. Walking in nature, stretching deeply, flowing through hot yoga, strengthening with pilates, lifting weights with control and presence. I discovered that moving gently didn’t mean losing strength - it meant building a kind of strength that felt sustainable, energising, and kind to my body.
Slow fitness isn’t about doing less; it’s about moving in a way that supports your body instead of shocking it. It’s about working with your energy, not against it.
Of course, it goes without saying - exercise is personal. Some people thrive in an intensive spin class or a killer HIIT session and that’s none of my business (love that for you!!). What I want out of exercise isn’t necessarily what someone else wants - , but I wanted to share my discoveries in case it connects a few dots for some of you reading. Let’s get into it…
